How to Load a PODS Container: Tips From Professional Movers

Mover loading a couch into a truck in Raleigh

Portable storage containers like PODS are a popular way to move or store belongings around Raleigh, because you load on your own schedule and someone else drives. The catch is that a poorly loaded container lets furniture slide and boxes crush on the road. These are the same loading habits our crew uses on every truck and container.

Plan the Load Before You Lift Anything

Group items by size before loading starts: large furniture, appliances, boxes, then awkward pieces like lamps, rugs and bikes. Stage them near the container so you are not deciding what goes next while holding a dresser.

Put the Heaviest Items in First

  • Start with appliances, dressers, bookcases and other heavy pieces against the far wall.
  • Spread weight evenly from side to side so the container stays balanced when it is lifted and moved.
  • Stand sofas on end when it is safe for the piece, which saves a lot of floor space.
  • Keep heavy boxes low and light boxes on top.

Load in Tight Tiers and Tie Off Each Section

Build the load in walls from floor to ceiling, one section at a time. After each section, run a strap or rope across it and secure it to the container’s tie-down points. Tight tiers with no gaps are what keep things from shifting in transit.

Protect Furniture and Fill the Gaps

  • Wrap wood furniture in moving pads or blankets and stretch wrap.
  • Cover mattresses with plastic bags so they stay clean.
  • Use soft items like pillows, cushions and bags of linens to fill gaps between boxes.
  • Use uniform box sizes where possible. They stack far better than mixed sizes.

Save the Front for What You Need First

The last items loaded are the first ones out. Put your essentials box, bed frame and kitchen basics near the door so the first night in your new home is easier.

Our moving labor crew loads and unloads PODS and other portable containers with 1 to 4 movers, booked by the hour with a two-hour minimum.

When It Makes Sense to Hire Loading Help

Hiring help is worth it when you have heavy furniture, stairs, a tight deadline before the container is picked up, or no friends available on loading day. You still save compared to a full-service move because you are only paying for labor. See our moving labor service for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to load a PODS container?

It depends on how much you are loading, how far the container is from the door, stairs and the number of people helping. Having everything packed and staged before loading starts saves the most time.

Can you unload a container at my new home too?

Yes. Our crew can load at one end, unload at the other, or both, as long as both addresses are within the area we serve.

What is the minimum booking for loading help?

Moving labor has a two-hour minimum. Tell us the container size and what is going in it and we will recommend a crew size.
